CAIR-NY Condemns ‘KKK’ Death Threats Targeting Long Island Muslim Family

(NEW YORK, NY, 7/25/17) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned hate-filled and threatening messages targeting a Long Island Muslim family.

According to police, the family discovered written messages that were left in their mailbox on two separate occasions. One message stated “KKK Hate Muslims, We will kill you, Jesus loves you” along with the image of a swastika. The previous message read “The KKK is coming for you Muslims.” Police are currently investigating it as a hate crime.

“This is evidence of the ongoing and increasing number of hate incidents targeting the Muslim community in New York and nationwide,” said Afaf Nasher, executive director for CAIR-NY. “It is an obligation of our government to ensure that everyone in our community is free to practice their faith without intimidation. We are glad to see that authorities are pursuing this incident as a hate crime and hope that the perpetrator is caught and brought to justice.”

Earlier this year, CAIR-NY announced the release of “The Empowerment of Hate,” CAIR’s Civil Rights Report detailing a more than 50 percent nationwide increase in anti-Muslim biased incidents in 2016 over the previous year. This spike in anti-Muslim incidents was accompanied by a 44 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes during the same period.

CAIR recently released a report indicating that anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States increased by 91 percent in the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2016.

Just last month, CAIR-NY received a hate filled note threatening “extermination” in the mail. The threatening letter originated in the United Kingdom, and had similarities to concurrent threats against a Manhattan Masjid.
