CAIR-NY Welcomes Arrest in Anti-Muslim Hate Crime

(NEW YORK, NY, 7/15/ 08) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed the arrest of a suspect in an alleged bias-motivated attack against a Muslim couple and called on the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office to prosecute it to the full extent of the law.
On July 10, the alleged attacker pulled a knife on the couple while spewing religious slurs such as: “Mother f***ers Muslims you killed my people back there. I’m going to kill you.” The assailant also allegedly told the couple he had a gun. The incident took place in front of the couple’s six-month-old granddaughter.
The assailant was arrested the same day on hate crime charges for menacing in the second and third degree and aggravated harassment and also for possession of a weapon.
“CAIR-NY commends the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force for its swift response to this disturbing incident,” said CAIR-NY Civil Rights Director Aliya Latif. “We urge the Brooklyn District Attorney to prosecute this case to the full extent of the law. No one should live in fear of harassment or feel unsafe, especially near their homes. ”
Latif said CAIR-NY will continue to monitor this case.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties group and has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil liberties, and empower American Muslims.
