(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/4/16) â€“ The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nationâ€™s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered condolences to the family and loved ones of Muslim scholar and leader Dr. Taha Jabir Alalwani, who passed away today after a long illness.
â€œOn behalf of CAIRâ€™s board and staff, we offer sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Dr. Taha Jabir Alalwani, whose work – including the students he taught, the books he wrote and the institutions he helped establish – will benefit Muslims around the world for generations to come,â€ said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. â€œTo God we belong and to Him we return.â€
Awad added: â€œDr. Taha Jabir Alalwani was an internationally-recognized pioneering leader and reformist thinker who founded institutions and helped to advance beneficial knowledge in the U.S. and around the world.
According to the Berkeley Center for Religion, Peace, & World Affairs of Georgetown University, Dr. Taha Jabir Alalwani was the president of Cordoba University in Ashburn, Va. He also previously served as a founding chairman of the Fiqh Council of North America and as the president of the International Institute of Islamic Thought. He was a regular contributor to the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences.
Dr. Alalwani received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Islamic Legal Theory and Jurisprudence from Cairoâ€™s Al-Azhar University before teaching Islamic jurisprudence for 10 years at the Islamic University of Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud in Riyadh. He was a member of the Council of the Muslim World League in Mecca and the Organization of the Islamic Conferenceâ€™s Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah.â€
