CAIR-OK Hosts Muslim Former Army Chaplain to Gitmo

(TULSA, OK 6/9/08) On June 6, the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK), in cooperation with the American Civil Liberties Union, Tulsa Interfaith Alliance, Islamic Society of Tulsa and the Muslim Student Association of University of Tulsa, co-hosted a discussion forum at the University of Tulsa with the Muslim former U.S. Army chaplain to Guantanamo Bay.
Captain James Yee, a third-generation Chinese-American, spoke on the topic of “Faith and Patriotism Under Fire,” telling the interfaith audience how he discovered Islam, about his work in the U.S. Army at Guantanamo Bay, and then his wrongful arrest on charges of spying, espionage and aiding the enemy. Yee was later cleared of these charges.

“I am living proof that civil liberties are eroding in the United States and we must work to return the high standing of America in the world,” Yee said. He also affirmed the importance of interfaith dialogue to promote understanding.

“Captain Yee is a true American hero. The story of the hardships he endured and his determined pursuit of justice should serve as a warning and an inspiration to us all,” said CAIR-OK Executive Director Razi Hashmi. “As always, CAIR remains committed to continuing to protect the civil liberties of Americans and speaking up for justice.”
James Yee is the author of “For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire.” He was recently elected as a pledged delegate for Senator Barack Obama in Washington’s 9th Congressional District.
