(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 8/10/2016) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations Oklahoma Chapter (CAIR-OK) today announced the release of its newest resource, an “Employers Guide to Islamic Religious Practices.”
The guide is intended to explain common Islamic religious practices to employers and provide a guideline of federal and state laws and regulations that protect the rights of religious practitioners in the workplace.
“This resource is not intended to replace a human relations or compliance department, but we hope that it will provide a summary of how employers can support their Muslim employees and foster a healthy working relationship between employers and workers,” said Civil Rights Director Veronica Laizure. “Additionally, Muslim employees may find it helpful for understanding their civil rights in the workplace.”
The Employers Guide will be provided free of charge to local businesses, state agencies and other employers.
Last December, CAIR-OK's Civil Rights Department released a 2015 Civil Rights Report that showed a number of employment-related complaints, including denials of religious accommodations and failure to hire based on a need for an accommodation, as well as ongoing hostile work environment situations.
“We hope that through resources like these, we can stop discrimination in the workplace before it even starts by empowering both employees and their employers to know their rights and obligations,” said Laizure.
CAIR-Oklahoma is a chapter of America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
