(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/1/2017) — The Oregon Committee of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oregon) today called for hate crime charges in the case of a Muslim couple in that state who were reportedly harassed and threatened during a road incident in Portland.

CAIR-Oregon says the couple was allegedly targeted by a white man in his 30s or 40s in another vehicle who allegedly shouted slurs such as “take the burka off, this is America, go back to your f***ing country.” The alleged assailant also reportedly hung out his vehicle’s window while making hand gestures in the shape of a gun, pulling the “trigger” multiple times.

The Muslim civil rights organization has been in touch with the Portland mayor’s office and local police to seek immediate action in the case.

“Given the recent deadly attack in Portland, we urge the mayor and local law enforcement authorities to swiftly apprehend the alleged perpetrator and to bring any appropriate hate crime charges,” said CAIR-Oregon Committee Member Zakir Khan.

Earlier today, CAIR condemned hate incidents targeting the African-American community in the Washington, D.C., area.

Another CAIR report released last month indicates that the most prevalent trigger of anti-Muslim bias incidents in 2017 has been the victim’s ethnicity or national origin. Eleven percent of incidents have occurred as a result of an individual being perceived as Muslim. A Muslim woman’s headscarf has been a trigger in 8 percent of incidents.
