CAIR-Sacramento to Host Emergency Town Hall with Sh. Omar Suleiman Addressing Police-Shooting of Stephon Clark

(SACRAMENTO, CA, 3/28/18) – This evening, the Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, will host an emergency town hall meeting to discuss the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark.

Clark, an African-American Muslim from Sacramento, was shot and killed by law enforcement last week. Clark was the father of two young boys and, despite conflicting reports immediately following the incident, was later found to be unarmed.

At the town hall meeting, nationally-known American Muslim scholar Sheikh Omar Suleiman from Texas will lead faith leaders from across the Sacramento region in addressing systemic injustice.

The event is co-hosted by CAIR-SV, Sacramento NAACP, Sacramento Area Congregations Together (SAC ACT), and a coalition of more than 10 mosques from across the Greater Sacramento Region.

On Thursday, Stephon Clark’s family will hold a traditional Islamic funeral service, which will be led by Imam Zaid Shakir (Co-founder, Zaytuna College), who in 2016 led the funeral service of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. At Thursday’s memorial service, Suleiman will also deliver remarks with other speakers, including Rev. Al Sharpton.

Last week, CAIR-SV Civil Rights Attorney Saad Sweilem released the following statement:

“There must be a thorough investigation into what happened to Stephon Clark and what led to this young man being killed in his own backyard. We have seen too often the deaths of unarmed African-American boys and men as a result of police-involved shootings.”
