(SAN DIEGO, CA, 11/21/17) — The San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic-Relations (CAIR-San Diego) last week hosted an education forum titled “All that Parents Need to Know” in collaboration with the Islamic Center of San Diego.
The forum aimed at educating families on various topics affecting students in the San Diego community and providing information necessary to help them navigate the education system. Panelists included principals, education transformation development director, teachers, English language specialists and the Chair of the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education.
Among the panelists were also school psychologists, and DELAC “District English Learners Advisory Committee” Chair.
Families were educated on the benefits of the bilingual brain and the importance of speaking their native languages at home. The panelists explained that children designated as English learners were entitled to access both designated and integrated English Language Development programs to meet their children’s needs. Parents were urged to report any incidents of Islamophobia and bullying to the school, school district and to the CAIR-San Diego office if their concerns are not addressed. Reports to CAIR San Diego office can be made online or by calling 858-278-4547.
The panelists also encouraged parents to attend School Site Council (SSC) meetings and other parent’s advocacy group such as and Community Advisory Committee (CAC), and District English Learners Advisory Committee (DELAC).
Lallia Allali, CAIR-San Diego board member and Chair of CAIR’s Education Committee said “It is very important that members of our community are aware of the resources and the rights they have when navigating the school system in order to give their children the best chance of academic success. This forum has been very beneficial in providing a step in building that knowledge”.
