CAIR Seeks Stepped-Up Protection for Colorado Mosques Following Phone Threat

screenshot 2017 06 06 15 58 55(DENVER, CO, 6/6/2017) – The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CO) today called for stepped-up police protection for mosques in that state following obscene and threatening phone calls to several houses of worship.

CAIR-CO reports that a man called the Rocky Mountain Islamic Center in Lakewood, Colo., making obscene statements such as “Allah is a f***ing pig” and claiming that “his God was not the same as the God of Islam.” The caller also reportedly stated: “You guys are going to pay for Manchester and London.” The same individual apparently called other mosques in Northglenn and Denver. Local police and the FBI have been notified of the calls. (Lakewood Police Case Report Number 17-22340)

The Muslim civil rights organization is urging any other mosques that received such calls to report them to local police, the FBI and to CAIR-CO.

“Lakewood police have agreed to step up protection of the targeted mosque, and we urge local law enforcement authorities throughout the state to take similar actions, particularly during activities and prayers associated with the ongoing Ramadan fast,” said CAIR-CO Board Co-Chair Farid Amin.

He said CAIR is asking American Muslims and Islamic institutions to take extra security precautions and is offering Muslim community leaders free copies of its booklet, “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety.” The booklet may be requested through CAIR’s website:

CAIR’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C., has noted an unprecedented spike in hate incidents targeting Muslims and other minority groups since the November 8 election. Since the beginning of the year, CAIR has called for investigations of possible bias motives for dozens of other incidents targeting mosques in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Kentucky, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Texas, and a number of other states. By comparison, in the January-March period in 2016, CAIR recorded 19 such incidents.

CAIR recently released a report showing a 57 percent increase in anti-Muslim incidents in 2016 over the previous year. This spike in anti-Muslim incidents was accompanied by a 44 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes during the same period.
