CAIR-SFBA: Attorneys to Monitor ‘Muslim Ban’ Implementation at Airports

chapter logos california(SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 06/28/17) — On Thursday, June 29, attorneys from Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice-ALC), the Council on American-Islamic Relations-San Francisco Bay Area office (CAIR-SFBA), One Justice, and other civil rights organizations will be monitoring the implementation of the ‘Muslim Ban’ Executive Order at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), as well as the Oakland and San Jose airports.

On June 26, the United States Supreme Court agreed to lift part of the lower courts’ stays on the Trump Administration’s second ‘Muslim Ban’. According to the Court’s ruling, certain visitors from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen, as well as refugees, will not be permitted to enter the country unless they have a “bona fide” relationship with a person or entity in the United States.

According to a June 14 memo, the Ban will go into effect 72 hours after the Court’s ruling. Attorneys will be on site and available via hotline services beginning at 7:00AM PST.

Advancing Justice-ALC and CAIR-SFBA facilitated over 30 ‘Know Your Rights’ workshops across the Bay Area following the signing of the administration’s first ‘Muslim Ban’. Following the June 26 decision, the organizations issued a community advisory about the implications for travelers moving forward.

“We must stand united against discrimination. As this administration has stated time and time again, this is a ‘Muslim Ban,'” said CAIR-SFBA Civil Rights Attorney Brittney Rezaei. “Once again Muslim immigrants and refugees fleeing violence are being told that they will be treated differently because of their religion. We must not allow these policies to be normalized.”

“The ‘Muslim Ban’ – including its revised form – is discriminatory in its intent, devastating in its effect, and corrosive to the soul of our country,” said Advancing Justice-ALC Staff Attorney Christina Sinha.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
