The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Muslim Students Association of North America (MSA), and Young Muslims hosted a know your rights and impactful protesting webinar this weekend, providing support and resources for students who are protesting to end the Gaza genocide.

Know Your Rights: Encounters with Law Enforcement
More than 150 guests heard CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadier Abbas offer an understanding of the legal rights of protestors. These included knowing the difference between protests at private universities and public universities. Abbas also discussed how to handle law enforcement interactions.
CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor added best practices from both experience and research for improving the outcomes of protests. Saylor covered a simple plan for focusing a protest on outcomes as well as tips for persuasive messaging.
“Your revolution is to stop a genocide,” Saylor told attendees.
Afterward, Saylor added, “The George Floyd protests reminded America that we need to have some difficult conversations in our nation. To see the bastions of academic freedom deploying law enforcement against their own students and faculty who support an end to a genocide suggests such uncomfortable conversations remain unwelcome.”

CAIR chapters nationwide are supporting the free speech rights of students and their call for an end to Israeli genocide, ethnic cleansing and forced starvation.
Earlier this month, CAIR released its 2024 civil rights report, which reveals the highest number of complaints it has ever received in its 30-year history.

Titled “Fatal: The Resurgence of Anti-Muslim Hate,” the report documents 8,061 complaints. Nearly half of all complaints received in 2023 were reported in the final three months of the year.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
