Muslim civil rights group asks that incident be investigated as possible hate crime

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/26/14) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today expressed the Muslim community’s solidarity with Massachusetts Christians following the possibly bias-motivated vandalism of a church nativity scene in which a statue of the baby Jesus was replaced with a severed pig’s head.

CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, also asked that the incident be investigated as a possible hate crime.

The vandalism of the nativity scene at Sacred Hearts parish in Haverhill, Mass., was discovered Christmas morning.

“American Muslims stand with the Christian community in condemning this desecration of a religious display and against anyone who would target a house of worship in such an apparently hate-filled manner,†said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Americans of all faith must be free to celebrate their religious holidays without intimidation by bias-motivated attacks.â€

Hooper noted that Muslims revere and honor Jesus.

CAIR: Jesus and Muhammad are Brothers

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
