(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/22/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a proposal to rename streets in Montgomery, Ala., that currently have names related to the Confederacy.
Montgomery’s Mayor Reed is asking the city council to reconsider a March proposal to do away with anything across the city that places praise on persons who supported slave ownership, Jim Crow and/or the confederacy. Montgomery Public School System has already renamed two schools, and if the proposal is accepted the city would rename 10 to 11 streets named for leaders in the Confederacy.

“We urge Montgomery elected officials to accept this proposal to rename streets currently named after figures from the traitorous Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Public spaces should be named after people we can all respect and honor, not after those who sought to destroy our nation and defend white supremacy.”
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
