CAIR Supports Swift Removal of Louisiana Confederate Monument

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/11/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed its support for the swift removal of a Confederate monument in St. Landry Parish, La.

Plans to remove the monument, which stands outside the St. Landry Parish courthouse, has been halted by a dispute over land ownership. Lawyers are currently researching the records to find out who the land belongs to.

“We urge elected officials in St. Landry Parish to work to come to an agreement with all parties involved in the dispute and swiftly remove this monument to treason and white supremacy from outside the courthouse,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Monuments to the racist Confederacy have no place outside what is supposed to be a place of justice.”

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
