CAIR-Tampa: FL Manager Suspended for Anti-Muslim Slur

(TAMPA, FL, 2/6/08) – The Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Tampa) today announced that a Florida manager of a Pennsylvania-based security company has been suspended for calling a Muslim job applicant a “terrorist.”
The suspension of the St. Moritz Security Services, Inc. (SMSSI) manager came following CAIR-Tampa’s intervention in the case.
On January 11, 2008, a licensed security guard who is Muslim applied for a job listed on the website Minutes after applying online, the Muslim applicant received an e-mail reply from SMSSI’s Florida operations manager with the word “terrorist.”

CAIR-Tampa filed a complaint with SMSSI seeking “appropriate” action. SMSSI agreed to resolve the case by issuing a written apology to the Muslim applicant, suspending the manager, offering an interview to the applicant, committing to implement a zero-tolerance discrimination policy, and incorporating sensitivity training relating to Muslims applicants and employees.

“We are pleased that SMSSI took responsibility for the incident and responded in a swift and professional manner,” said CAIR-Tampa Executive Director Ahmed Bedier. “Corporations should know that Islamophobia, like other forms of discrimination, is unacceptable in the workplace.”
Bedier said CAIR publishes a booklet, called “An Employer’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to prevent these types of incidents.
