(SEATTLE, WA, 10/5/2017) – The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Washington) today condemned multiple instances of Islamophobic fliers and graffiti found on the Western Washington University campus in Bellingham, Wash.
According to reports, there have been three separate occasions of anti-Muslim fliers, posters, graffiti, and various printed material found on campus since August. The most recent incident took place on September 29, two days after the start of fall quarter.
Fliers have called for the extermination of “Islamo-Nazi scum” and “Islamo-Fascist Vermin,” among other hateful and threatening messages.
Anyone with any information that could help identify who may be involved should call Western Washington University Police, 360-650-3911.
“We have seen a disturbing increase in anti-Muslim bullying and intimidation in schools and on campuses in our region,” said CAIR-WA Media & Outreach Director Sarah Stuteville, citing a pilot study by the organization showing more than 60 percent of Muslim students surveyed have reported feeling unsafe since 2016. “All students deserve the right to pursue an education in a safe and supportive environment.”
CAIR-WA does work with local schools to help combat religious bullying. The organization has reached out to administrators at Western to offer resources and support.
CAIR’s national office offers a booklet, called “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
The Washington-based civil rights and advocacy organization urges community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR-WA’s Civil Rights Department at 206.367.4081 or by filing a report at: http://cairseattle.org/get-help
