(WASHINGTON, DC, 5/17/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of two suspects who allegedly assaulted a man of “Middle Eastern national origin” in Northern Virginia.
Police say officers responded to the reported assault May 14 in Manassas, Va. The alleged victim, a 35-year-old man, told police that the driver and passenger of another vehicle yelled “go back to your country” and “you don’t belong here.” One alleged assailant reportedly got out of his vehicle, grabbed the victim and assaulted him.
The alleged victim gave police the license number of the suspect vehicle, which led to the arrest of Jimmy Lynn Greer and Dustin David Greer on charges of assault and battery with a hate crime enhancement. Investigators says they believe that the victim was targeted by the suspects because of his Middle Eastern national origin.
“We thank law enforcement authorities for their prompt and professional action in this case and urge state and national leaders to speak out against the growing bigotry in our country that is being promoted even by those in high office,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
The Washington-based organization’s recently-released 2018 Civil Rights Report, “Targeted,” showed a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents against American Muslims from 2016 to 2017, and a 15 percent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes in that same time period.
