(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/10/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed bias charges for an alleged anti-Asian road rage incident in Oregon on Friday.
Two cars went to a Portland Police precinct, with one driver yelling at the other. Police say one driver was the alleged victim of a bias crime and was menaced with what he thought was a gun. The other driver was arrested for allegedly pulling up next to the victim and making bias-motivated statements about the victim’s Asian descent and the belief that he was Chinese. He now faces a second-degree bias charge and menacing.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“The increasing bias-motivated attacks on Asian-Americans must stop. Hate targeting Asian-Americans is unfortunately a manifestation of the rising bigotry we have seen nationwide targeting all minority communities. We hope charges in this case will send a message to all those who would attack or harass anyone based on racism, xenophobia or other forms of bigotry.”
Hooper noted that earlier this month, CAIR welcomed the arrest of a suspect for an allegedly anti-Asian attack in Portland, Ore.
He added that the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Asian hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
