(WASHINGTON D.C., 11/24/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a ban on flying Confederate flags at a privately-sponsored holiday parade in Mechanicsville, Va.
Confederate flags were common at the Mechanicsville holiday parade, hosted in December by the Rotary Club, in previous years. However, the rules of the parade this year include a ban on the display of Confederate flags and symbols. The ban prompted positive responses from many in the community, but the pro-Confederate group that flew the flags in previous years announced it was boycotting the parade this December.

“The Confederate flag represents systemic anti-Black racism, white supremacy and treason,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome the ban and urge communities nationwide to similarly reject symbols of hate.”
Hooper noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and symbols from public spaces nationwide.
