CAIR Welcomes Dropping of Confederate Name from Naval Academy Building in Maryland

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/12/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the renaming of a building on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., previously named for a Confederate military figure.

The superintendent’s home on the Naval Academy’s campus, previously named the Buchanan House after Confederate Admiral Franklin Buchanan, has been renamed the Farragut House after Admiral David Farragut, a Southerner who led Union naval forces in several key battles.

“We are glad to see that a building at one of our nation’s leading military academies will no longer honor a traitor who sought to defend slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
