CAIR Welcomes Dropping of Confederate Street Names in Virginia City

(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/13/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the dropping of 14 Confederate street names in Fairfax City, Va.

The Fairfax City Council voted last night to change the street names. The changes were proposed in September by the 16-member Stakeholder Advisory Group, tasked with reevaluating the way the Civil War was represented in the county.

“We welcome the city council’s vote to end the public honoring of the Confederacy and its legacy of white supremacy, racism and treason,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison.

He noted that in May, CAIR supported calls for the streets to be renamed.

CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

Last month, CAIR welcomed the removal of an image depicting a Confederate soldier from the city of Fairfax’s seal.
