(WASHINGTON, DC, 7/13/17) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s demand that Myanmar (Burma) permit U.N. investigators to enter the country for a fact-finding mission about the abuses suffered by Rohingya Muslims.
“We commend Ambassador Haley for supporting an international investigation into the allegations that Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims are suffering mass killings, torture and rape at the hands of security forces,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “The United States should also withhold economic and political support for the government of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi until she condemns and ends the campaign of ethnic cleaning, which echoes the Bosnian genocide of the 20th century.”
Myanmar has refused to grant visas to United Nations investigators charged with investigating allegations of mass violence against the nation’s Rohingya Muslim minority.
The U.N. issued a report in February alleging that Myanmar’s government has engaged in behavior that “very likely” constitutes crimes against humanity and ethnic cleaning, including mass killings and gang rapes.
De facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has led the ongoing movement to transform Myanmar from a military dictatorship into a democracy, has also faced criticism for ignoring or downplaying the plight of the nation’s Rohingya population.
The Washington-based civil rights and advocacy organization is urging Muslim parents and students to report any bias incidents to school officials, to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420, or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report
CAIR recently launched an app to share critical ‘know your rights’ information and simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents and is urging Muslims to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
