(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/6/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Montana’s legislature to allow prayers of all faiths after that body’s leadership reportedly prevented a Rabbi from offering his scheduled prayer.
The Montana Jewish Project sought clarification as to why Rep. Ed Stafman, a rabbi, was denied the opportunity to lead prayer at the end of the legislative session.

“We urge Montana lawmakers to respect our nation’s religious diversity by allowing representatives of all faiths to offer prayers in support of justice and mutual understanding,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Rep. Stafman, and the citizens of Montana, deserve an explanation as to why he was not allowed to offer his prayer.”
He noted that earlier this year, CAIR condemned reported neo-Nazi vandalism of a site in Montana sacred to Native-Americans.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR also recently condemned the reported distribution of white supremacist materials in Wyoming. Last year, CAIR similarly condemned the distribution of antisemitic materials to homes in Wyoming.
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
