(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/2/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the distribution of White supremacist flyers in Birmingham, Ala., and welcomed the changing of the names of mascots for two schools in Birmingham, Ala., previously named for Confederate historical figures.
Photos were posted on social media Sunday of a group of men walking through Birmingham’s Highland Park neighborhood putting up posters reportedly promoting the website of a White supremacist group.

Two schools in Montgomery formerly named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis will change their mascots from the “generals” and “volunteers,” in reference to their former names. The schools’ names were changed in 2020.

“Americans of all backgrounds must come together to condemn and oppose White supremacy, racism and the legacy of the traitorous Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
