CAIR Reiterates Support for Removal of Confederate Flag from Tennessee County Seal

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/12/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated its support for the removal of the Confederate flag from the seal of Williamson County, Tennessee.

A Chancery Court judge will decide whether or not Williamson County can remove a Confederate flag from its seal. The local Sons of Confederate Veterans filed suit against the county and the Tennessee Historical Commission last year after the county attempted to change the seal.

Last year, CAIR welcomed a decision by the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) that would allow the removal of the Confederate flag from county’s seal.

“We reiterate our support for the efforts by Williamson County officials to remove the flag of the traitorous, white supremacist Confederacy from its seal,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Such symbols should not be used to represent any American government entity.”

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
