Community Alert: CAIR Maryland Invites Applicants for New ‘ANCHOR Project’ to Promote Diverse Voices in Media

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is inviting students to apply to participate in its new initiative “ANCHOR Project: Immersive Journalism for Empowered Youth Voices” – a 3-part series offering a unique opportunity for Muslim students between the ages of 16-22 to tour a professional newsroom, participate in hands-on media training and learn from seasoned journalists and communications experts.

Part One, scheduled to be held on Thursday, Dec. 12th, 2024, will feature a tour of the WJZ-TV newsroom studios in Baltimore for a behind-the-scenes look at how television news is produced. WJZ-TV is a subsidiary of CBS Television Stations.

“Media professionals play a powerful role in disseminating information and shaping public perceptions,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “This program aims to motivate and inspire young Muslims, especially those passionate about storytelling, to consider pursuing careers in the field of journalism.”

The objective of CAIR’s ANCHOR Project is to encourage and promote representation in media by fostering a new generation of journalists who are committed to truth, integrity, and representation.

The initiative’s goals are to: 

  • Provide participants with real-world insights into journalism and media careers.
  • Equip students with practical skills for storytelling, reporting, and broadcasting.
  • Cultivate leadership and critical thinking in addressing underrepresentation in media.
  • Build a network of aspiring journalists and mentors within the American Muslim community.

Note: Space is limited. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply early. Applicants under the age of 18 will require parental permission.

Dates for Part Two and Part Three of the series will be announced soon.  It is not mandatory for applicants to participate in all three parts.  However, it is encouraged that you do so in order to gain the full benefits of this immersive experience.
