(TAMPA, FL 2/25/213) — The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) today condemned the shooting of a Sikh man, Kanwaljit Singh, in what appears to be a violent hate crime attack near Daytona Beach.
Singh, who was wearing a turban, was driving with his son when people in a black truck shot six bullets at them, two of which hit Singh, leaving him in critical condition.
CAIR-FL's executive director in Tampa, Hassan Shibly, issued the following statement:
“In the past year we have seen many violent hate crimes against Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim. We must stand united as a community to fight the prejudice which can lead to such hatred and tragic senseless violence. We pray for the quick recovery of the victim and ask the community to remain vigilant and contact authorities if they have any information about this crime or feel threatened at any time.”
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
