(Miami, FL, 8/9/2018) – The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today condemned recently discovered Islamophobic social media posts made by an Okaloosa County Commissioner.
On his Facebook posts, Graham Fountain said, “We can’t let the colonization of Islam and sharia law take over of America” and that he is “against the political take over of the world by their Sharia system of law,” along with additional anti-Muslim and white supremacist comments in defense of his original claim.
CAIR-Florida asks Commissioner Fountain for the retraction and disavowal of such statements that promote hate and Islamophobia. Fountain’s rhetoric comes at a time when the Florida Muslim community is being targeted with an unprecedented number of hate crimes.
“We condemn the Okaloosa County Commissioner’s comments that irresponsibly disseminated lies and conspiracy theories against the American Muslim community,” CAIR-Florida’s Communications Director Wilfredo Amr Ruiz said. “Public officials like Fountain do a disservice to their constituents and all citizens by promoting hate against any individuals, regardless of faith our background.”
Recently, CAIR condemned a number of Islamophobic statements made by individuals in public office or working for the federal government.
