National Deputy Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Edward Ahmed Mitchell said many Americans are deeply troubled by the situation and are urging restraint.’\
“I, like many Americans, am deeply disturbed by this. We are calling on Congress to bring an end to this before more innocent people die,” Mitchell said.
He added that the Iranian people should be able to choose and elect their own leaders without foreign interference or internal oppression.
On Long Island, officials in Nassau and Suffolk counties say there will be an increased police presence throughout the region, including at places of worship, as a precaution amid heightened tensions.
CAIR says it is also monitoring the situation and encouraging mosques to exercise standard safety precautions, especially during Ramadan.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein called the attack “another effort to destabilize the Middle East and potentially even create a wider war in that region.”

“Many people in southeastern Michigan have family ties in countries all throughout that area,” Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said. “There are many people concerned about their loved ones and friends who could be injured if not killed in this new wave of violence.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, encouraged Americans to contact the White House and their members of Congress to demand an end to the Trump administration’s “unnecessary, unjustified, and unconstitutional” strikes against Iran “for Israel’s benefit.”
“The Trump administration has completed its transformation into the Bush administration by starting another unnecessary, unjustified and unconstitutional regime-change war in the Middle East under pressure from the Israeli government and its supporters,” the CAIR statement said.

“Launching a war during active negotiations and the holy month of Ramadan is unconstitutional, unnecessary and dangerous,” said Christine Mohamed, executive director of CAIR’s Pittsburgh chapter. “These actions place innocent lives at risk and further destabilize an already volatile region.”

Britton O’Shields, staff attorney in Alabama for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, is speaking on behalf of the local Muslim community. She said the attack is raising serious red flags for Muslims who are concerned about how it might be weaponized against them domestically.
“I think the Muslim community is feeling a lot like the broader American people in the sense that they don’t want this war,” O’Shields said.
O’Shields explains their biggest concern, too.
“There is a lot of concern that this event will be used to justify the oppression of Muslims domestically here in the United States. That’s sort of where everyone’s concerns lie right now,” O’Shields said.
