The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today welcomed the opening of a multi-faith quiet room at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The space, located near gate 130 in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, is intended to be used by people of all faiths for prayer, reflection, meditation, and quiet time.
On Wednesday, June 5, faith leaders representing organizations throughout Southern California, including CAIR-LA, Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, Shia Muslim Council of Southern California, Muslim Public Affairs Council, and local Jewish organizations, were invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the room.
In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:
“This initiative is a significant and heartening development for travelers of all faiths who find themselves in transit and in need of a peaceful space for prayer and reflection. The introduction of a dedicated multi-faith quiet room at LAX is a testament to our city’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for the spiritual needs of every individual.
“On behalf of the approximately 500,000 Muslims in Southern California, in addition to the countless others who will likely travel through LAX at some point in their lives, we would like to thank the team at LAX for ensuring people of all faiths feel welcome.
“We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to community activist Salam Ali for leading the coordination with LAX representatives over the past six years.”
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, LAX CEO John Ackerman stated:
“Today we come together to celebrate the universal values of compassion, understanding, and unity. Your presence here is a testament to the power of dialogue and collaboration and fostering unity and mutual respect. Here at LAX, our commitment to creating spaces where all are welcome is one we take incredibly seriously. Within this room, passengers and employees of all faiths can find solace, reflection, and spiritual nourishment … Your guidance and insight have ensured that this room is a place of genuine inclusivity where people from all backgrounds can feel welcome and respected.”
CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
