(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 9/12/13) — The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today congratulated Staff Attorney Lena Masri for being honored by a chapter of the Federal Bar Association for her pro bono work.
Masri was honored yesterday at the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association State of the Court Luncheon for “providing pro bono legal services on behalf of poor and indigent clients in the Eastern District of Michigan.”
In recent months, Masri has filed federal lawsuits that challenge discriminatory policies requiring Muslim inmates to sacrifice an adequate diet when they participate in the Ramadan fast, and denying Muslim inmates a halal diet.
“Lena Masri is an exemplary member of the Michigan Muslim community and a leading attorney on for civil and human rights in our state,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “We congratulate her along with the Michigan Muslim community for this honor, which reflects well upon all of us.”
