(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 3/18/14) – On Saturday, March 22, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) will hold its first Social Justice Gala, with the theme “Civil Rights through Creative Expressions.”Â [March 22, 5:30-9 p.m.,Â Coffman Memorial Union, the Great HallÂ at the University of Minnesota]
This groundbreaking event brings together local artists and their creative talents to express CAIR-MN's social justice and racial equity work in protecting civil liberties.
Featured artists include spoken word artists, poets, singers, and aÂ beatboxerÂ from the Minnesota Muslim community. The event will also feature a live artist painting a canvas that will be auctioned at the end of the evening.
The gala will offer a taste of cuisines from around the world reflecting the diversity within the Minnesota Muslim community. It will include appetizers from the Middle East, desserts from India, hors d'oeuvres from China, starters from Somalia, and more. Guests will have the opportunity to take home keepsake mementos of their names written in Arabic calligraphy by young student calligraphers.
“This groundbreaking event is designed to incorporate the arts in celebrating the civil rights accomplishments that CAIR-MN has achieved since its inception,” said CAIR-MN Director Nausheena Hussain. “We hopeÂ toÂ carry out our mission of promoting justice and mutual understanding through various forms of artistic express.”
