NC MUSLIM WORKER TO RECEIVE APOLOGY, BACK PAY
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/5/06) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced today that a Muslim employee at a Belk department store in Durham, N.C., will be offered an apology and back pay after reporting that she was sent home because she had applied henna to her hands in celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, the holiday following the month-long fast of Ramadan. After CAIR’s intervention, Belk reviewed the incident and reprimanded the party responsible. The company also reaffirmed its policy supporting religious accommodation in the workplace.
