CAIR Reiterates Opposition to Va. Confederate Monument Ahead of Vote, Condemns N. Va. Hate Graffiti

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/5/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated its opposition to an attempt by Virginia’s Mathews County Board of Supervisors to preserve a Confederate monument

That board has called a special public hearing for Tuesday night in a controversial move designed to keep the monument outside a courthouse by transferring it to a private preservation group.

CAIR has previously opposed that attempt to block a future removal of the monument.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR also condemned racist and antisemitic hate graffiti in Virginia’s Loudoun County. The hate graffiti included Nazi swastikas, racial slurs and the phrase “stop white genocide,” among other offensive words and symbols.

“Symbols of hate, whether monuments to traitors to our nation or racist graffiti scrawled in public spaces, must be removed and repudiated,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “All Americans have a duty to challenge bigotry and to oppose any effort to preserve or promote racism and white supremacy.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly condemned growing bigotry nationwide and called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
