CAIR Urges Feds to Help Probe Vandalism Targeting North Dakota Immigrant Center

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/16/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to help investigate a possible bias motive for vandalism targeting an immigrant center in North Dakota.

Vandals smashed five windows at the New American Consortium for Wellness and Empowerment, which serves recent immigrants. Local police do not consider the vandalism a hate crime.

“Given the history of racist, Islamophobic and anti-immigrant incidents in the area it would only be prudent for state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this latest incident,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Minority communities must see that local state and federal officials are working protect everyone, regardless of origin or background.”

He noted that last year, CAIR expressed solidarity with the Liberian-American community following the distribution of white supremacist flyers in Fargo, N.D., and called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate racist vandalism targeting an immigrant business center in Fargo as a hate crime.

Also last year, CAIR’s Minnesota chapter called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for vandalism targeting a Fargo, N.D., Muslim cemetery.

In 2021, CAIR called on local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate anti-Muslim, neo-Nazi and racist graffiti sprayed on a mosque in nearby Moorhead, Minn., as a hate crime.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
