Muslim civil rights groups says teacher's comments encourage 'atmosphere conducive to bullying'

(SEATTLE, WA, 2/18/2013) – On Tuesday, February 19, 2013, the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) will hold a news conference at its offices in Seattle to call on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate possible unlawful religious discrimination in Concrete School District.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 10 a.m.

WHERE: CAIR-WA office, 316 Maynard Avenue South, Suite 112A, Seattle, WA

In October 2012, a teacher at Concrete Middle School, reportedly compared Muslims to Nazis during a class lesson on bullying. The teacher allegedly stated that “just like Hitler,” Muslims train their children from birth to give their lives to Allah and are raised to be martyrs. She also allegedly stated that Muslim children are raised and taught to “kill innocents.”

After receiving a tip from a student shocked by the incident, CAIR-WA contacted school officials about the incident, but termed their brief reply “totally inadequate and unresponsive.”

“We will ask that the U.S. Department of Justice carry out an investigation into both the teacher's and the district's conduct in this case,” said CAIR-WA Civil Rights Coordinator Jennifer Gist. “Our attempts thus far to address the issue with the district have been unsuccessful. Educators need to know that bigoted, inflammatory statements will be taken seriously and that they are compromising the quality of education for all our children and encouraging and atmosphere conducive to bullying.”

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
