(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/12/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a newly-revealed ban on the flying of Confederate flags at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va.
Confederate flags disappeared from the Hollywood Cemetery, which is home to thousands of Confederate graves, in the summer of 2020. The cemetery reportedly adopted a policy banning the flying of Confederate flags that year but did not make a public announcement. A cemetery spokesman declined to say whether the ban is permanent or not.

“We welcome Hollywood Cemetery’s ban on the display of the Confederate flag, which symbolizes white supremacy, systemic anti-Black racism and treason,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We encourage the cemetery to make the ban permanent.”
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
