(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/28/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the renaming of Virginia’s Fort A.P. Hill to Fort Walker.
That new name honors Medal of Honor recipient and first female surgeon in the Civil War Doctor Mary E. Walker and replaces the name of a Confederate officer.

“We welcome the removal of the name of a traitor to our nation from a military installation and welcome its replacement with that of a true hero who worked to save lives,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison.
Allison said that in 2022, CAIR welcomed a plan to rename military installations named for Confederate historical figures and remove or modify a host of monuments and tributes to the Confederacy.
Earlier this month, CAIR welcomed efforts to remove a Confederate monument from Arlington National Cemetery.
He noted that CAIR previously expressed support for efforts to remove symbols of the Confederacy nationwide.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
