The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the transfer of 11 Guantanamo prisoners to Oman and repeated its call for the U.S. government to shut down the facility.
The Pentagon said it has transferred 11 Yemeni men to Oman this week after holding them for more than two decades without charge at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The transfer was the latest and biggest push by the Biden administration to clear Guantanamo of the last remaining detainees there who were never charged with a crime.

In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw said:
“We welcome the release of these 11 detainees and once again urge the Biden administration to close down Guantanamo immediately and completely. This institution has repeatedly engaged in the torture of detainees and numerous other human rights violations. It is time to shut it down for good.”
