The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by Volkswagen to sell its operations in China’s Xinjiang region after international outrage over the Chinese government’s genocide targeting Uyghur Muslims.
Volkswagen said it would sell its factory in Urumqi and a test track in Turpan.
Last week, CAIR welcomed the addition of 29 Chinese companies to the list of entities using forced labor involving Uyghur minorities.
“We welcome this decision by Volkswagen and urge other corporations profiting from the Chinese government’s genocidal actions in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region to follow its lead,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said that earlier this month, CAIR welcomed a ban on the entry to the United States of products produced by Esquel Group, one of the world’s largest textile and apparel companies, over allegations it uses forced Uyghur labor.
Hooper added that last month, CAIR welcomed DHS banning two Chinese companies over their reported use of Uyghur slave labor.
He noted that CAIR has previously welcomed the banning of Chinese companies using slave labor.
