(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 4/10/13) – On Saturday, April 13, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) will hold its 6th Annual Banquet featuring Iowa state Representative Ako Abdul-Samad. Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison and other local elected officials will be special guest speakers.
Ako Abdul-Samad is serving his second term in the Iowa House of Representatives and is now an Assistant Minority Leader. He serves on the Administration and Rules, Education, Labor, Transportation and Human Resources committees.
Representative Abdul-Samad is the CEO and Founder of the Creative Visions Human Development Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The nonprofit organization focuses on employment assistance and support services, healthcare management, community development and culture and diversity education. Representative Abdul-Samad is a published author and photographer.
Community members, leaders of mosques and Muslim organizations, business executives, and interfaith partners will attend the sold-out banquet, themed “Upholding the Constitution. Defending Civil Liberties.”
This year's banquet includes 12 sponsors and over 20 table sponsors from local corporations, small businesses, law schools, and nonprofit organizations. The event will feature a silent auction, a networking social, an awards ceremony and an opportunity to learn about CAIR-MN's accomplishments in defense of civil rights over the past year.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
