The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the sentencing of an Indiana woman who was charged last year for a bias-motivated stabbing targeting an Asian student at Indiana University.
Billie Davis, 57, was sentenced to six years in prison and three years of probation for the stabbing. She pleaded guilty to attacking the victim because of her Chinese descent. In September, CAIR welcomed her guilty plea.
In 2023, CAIR condemned the attack and said “local, state and national elected officials to do more to address the growing bigotry and violence targeting the Asian-American community.” Washington, D.C., based CAIR also said Indiana’s hate crime legislation should be applied in the case.
“We welcome the sentencing in this disturbing bias-motivated attack targeting a member of the Asian community and hope it sends a message of deterrence to bigots who would turn their hate-filled views into violent actions,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR has spoken out against anti-Asian attacks in New York, Colorado, Massachusetts, and a number of other states.
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
