CAIR-CA to Release New Report on Bullying of Muslim Students in California

cair ca logo(ANAHEIM, CA, 10/28/15) – On Friday, October 30, the California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) will hold simultaneous news conferences in Anaheim, San Diego and Santa Clara to release a new report documenting bias-based bullying of American Muslim students in that state's schools. 

The report, Mislabeled: The Impact of Bullying and Discrimination on California Muslim Students, is based on a statewide survey of more than 600 Muslim students ages 11 to 18. CAIR-CA asked the students questions about their relationships with peers and teachers and about their comfort levels participating in discussions about Islam and Muslims.

The CAIR-CA report also shares anecdotes collected from students during survey outreach and “know your rights†workshops. It follows a similar 2013 report, asking more questions and increasing response rates in previously underrepresented regions. The report also provides recommendations for policymakers, school officials and families about how best to protect children from bullying in school.
