CAIR Calls on NJ GOP to Repudiate Candidates’ Anti-Muslim, Racist Posts

websitelogo(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ, 10/14/15) — The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today called on Republican State Committee Chairman Sam Raia to repudiate anti-Muslim and racist comments made on Twitter and Facebook by Republican candidates.

CAIR-NJ said New Jersey State Assembly candidate and legislative staffer Synovve Bakke posted a comment on Twitter earlier this year stating: “When Norway decided to start deporting Muslims, crime went down. Sweden, Europe & America should take note #Muslims.†In another tweet, she called President Obama a “radical Muslim apologist.â€

Another Assembly candidate’s Facebook post called Sen. Cory Booker a “lying deceitful piece of filth†and “a lying two face cockroach.â€

CAIR is calling on Chairman Raia to repudiate these comments and the intolerant views they represent.

“The statements these candidates have made reveal a level of prejudice that could impact how they would potentially serve their constituents of different faiths and races,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues. “We should hold elected officials and members of their staff to a higher standard because they are obligated to represent and serve all people without bias or favor.”

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialog, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
