CAIR Calls on Oregon City Council to Repudiate Member’s Anti-Islam Smears

CAIR WA(SEATTLE, WA, 11/10/15) – The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) today called on the Dallas, Ore., city council to repudiate anti-Islam smears posted online by one of its members.

City Councilor Micky Garus posted Saturday on his personal and professional Facebook accounts that Islam is “pure evil” and that Muslims pose a “grave threat to our culture, country and race.” Garus made the comments in reference to Hamtramck, Mich., which recently elected America's first majority-Muslim city council. Garus wrote. “Are we okay allowing [Muslims] to take over our local, state and eventually federal governments?”

In response to the hate comments, Mayor Brian Dalton issued a written statement stating that Dallas is an inclusive community, but did not comment on Garus' post specifically.

“Councilor Garus has the right to hold bigoted views, but such extremist and un-American opinions raises serious questions about his ability to represent constituents of all faiths and backgrounds,†CAIR-WA Executive Director Arsalan Bukhari. “The city council must take a stance against Islamophobia by clearly repudiating Councilor Garus’ bigoted views, not only by affirming American values of religious freedom but also by speaking about the lives and contributions of the more than 50,000 Oregon Muslim children and families.â€

“Hate speech leads to hate crimes, and Councilor Garus’ dangerous rant and the city council’s timid response will contribute to an atmosphere that threatens the safety of not only thousands of everyday American Muslim women and children, but millions more who might ‘look Muslim,’†he said. “It also sends a very harmful message to the millions of American Muslim children, growing up across our nation, especially in Oregon, that their elected leaders might oppose their right to grow up with the same hopes and dreams as any other young American.â€

Bukhari added that recent mainstreaming of Islamophobia by public figures like front-running Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has contributed to hate attacks and bullying targeting hundreds of American Muslim women and children nationwide, including in Oregon.
