(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/7/14) – The Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas) today welcomed the resignation of Republican Party official Gavin Ellzey who tweeted last month that “offending Muslims is the duty of any civilized person, especially with a .45.” GOP leaders said the comments did not represent the party's viewpoint.
“We welcome Mr. Ellzey's decision and hope that he and other state Republicans will meet with representatives of the Kansas Muslim community to get to know one another on a personal level, because it is through personal interaction that friendships are formed and misunderstandings avoided,” said CAIR-Kansas Spokesperson Moussa Elbayoumy.
Elbayoumy noted that a GOP official in Virginia resigned this week after making similar anti-Muslim comments.
Earlier this year, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee also called on a party official to quit after that official disparaged Muslims.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
