CAIR-MI to Join Call for Federal Monitoring of Dearborn Heights Elections

(every vote countsSOUTHFIELD, MI, 8/1/2014) — On Saturday, August 2, the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) and other civil rights organizations will hold a press conference to call on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to monitor the upcoming primary and November elections in Dearborn Heights because of concerns about possible efforts to suppress the votes of Arab-Americans and Muslims.

WHAT: Press Conference Calling for Federal Monitoring of Dearborn Heights Primary
WHEN: Saturday, August 2, 1 p.m.
WHERE: Dearborn Heights City Office, 6045 Fenton St, Dearborn Heights, MI
CONTACT: CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid, 248-842-1418, dwalid@cair.com

“Based on the amount of complaints that many Arab-American and American Muslim absentee ballots have still not been properly processed, we are concerned about the fairness of the upcoming primary in Dearborn Heights,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.

Walid also stated that an ADC-MI representative will be at the press conference to present new information that has not been previously discussed regarding voting irregularities in Dearborn Heights.

After concerns were raised by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee – Michigan (ADC-MI) about absentee ballots of Arab Americans not being properly processed and American Muslims being turned away from the polls, CAIR-MI and other advocacy groups today wrote the DOJ urgently requesting federal monitoring of the upcoming primary in Dearborn Heights.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
