CAIR Reiterates Support for Efforts to Remove Ala. Confederate Monument Near Historically Black College

(WASHINGTON D.C., 1/31/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated its support for efforts to remove a Confederate monument located near a historically-Black college (HBCU) in Tuskegee, Ala.

A Macon County judge is scheduled to consider arguments Thursday over a Confederate monument that has stood for over 116 years in the majority-Black Alabama city of Tuskegee, home to a historically Black college. Macon County and several local residents have filed a lawsuit that the land on which the statue stands was illegally given to the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) in 1902. The land was reportedly provided to the UDC as a park exclusively for white people.

“A monument to white supremacist traitors who fought to uphold slavery should have no place in any city, especially not near a historically Black college,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We support the lawsuit to remove the monument and all efforts to rid this nation of the racist legacy of the Confederacy.”

Allison noted that CAIR has previously expressed support for the lawsuit to remove the monument.
