(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/2/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the decision to rename Fort Bragg, one of the United States’ most prominent military installations, as Fort Liberty.
Fort Bragg in North Carolina, originally named for a Confederate general, today became Fort Liberty.

“This momentous step signifies a significant shift toward inclusivity and diversity within our nation’s armed forces,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “It is proper that we honor the principle of liberty, not the sad legacy of slavery, anti-Black racism and white supremacy.”
Last month, CAIR welcomed the renaming of Fort Hood in Texas. The fort, which had been named Confederate General John Bell Hood, will be renamed Fort Cavazos, after a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and the first Latino to reach the rank of general in the US Army.
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
